Peter Horn’s masterpiece:Arico
Q1: Hi,Peter.Let’s make a brief introduction.
A2: Hi, I am Peter Horn.I am a Industrial designer.I live and work in Germany.
The filo chair as my first project for Goodtone and my newest project is the Arico leather chair.I have a design studio here in Germany.It’s called HDE.Designers in my office mainly design office furniture and office chairs.
Q2: How did you define yourself?
A2: Oh,it’s a difficult question.I don’t define myself as much as an artist.I define myself more like a architect of a product.I try to combine the different needs of a product, the aesthetical needs and technical needs and the needs of users and economical needs. I try to make a good mixture and at the end it should be a good product I hope.
Q3: Could you tell me your growth story?
A3: Yes, eh.I started my career 20 years ago.I started in a Germany design studio also doing office furniture mainly .But short time ago, I founded my own design office and I also started a lot of projects for office furniture industry.By the time, I have more and more project for other industries,including the electronic devices, machine for instant bicycle helmet and so on. But last year, I came back to my route.What to say, to the office furniture, especially the office chair.
Later I remember to my skills that I am not only a designer but I am also an engineer.I combine both skills and I started to make huge projects in the office chair industry designing and engineering (especially) office chair.It was a big adventure to me and from this time I made a lot of projects in this area only designing, only engineering and also combining.This is a thing that the customers want to have.(That is) To give the project to one company to do everything in one end.
Q4: How did you come out such great thoughts?
A4: Oh, That’s also a difficult question.So I am always collecting ideas everywhere, every time.At home, on television, when I am in a exhibition or I am reading a book,I am always collecting ideas and I have a big drawing in my head .I put all these ideas in. When I have a project, i try to put combine these ideas.That’s not only ideas of design for aesthetics and also technical ideas.Often I try to use technical ideas for chair I see in different spaces and then I combine it, combine the aesthetical ideas and mechanical ideas and other things to a good concept.
Q5: We’ve been partner for so long.What do you think of us.
A5: Oh yes.It’s really good cooperation with Goodtone I must say.It’s very easy going .It’s flat structure of Goodtone.People are very down to earth. Project managers, we can talk with him in a good way.But the most exciting is how fast the decision are made in Goodtone. Mostly I get the feedback in the next day also when it comes to the important questions.That’s very necessary and very helpful for this kind of project.Especially for Arico project, it’s interesting that how open Goodtone is to make innovations.They are very open for proposals from my side and they are happy to engage to realize these ideas.
Q6: How do you define office chair or a excellent chair?
A6: Oh,I don’t see office chair as a single piece.I mostly see the office as an environment.The office chair is only one piece but it’s very important piece.So it should fit in the environment of the office and it should be a good product itself, it should support the user.The user should feel well of the chair and it should be fit for his/her work.
Q7: What impact could an excellent chair bring to the user?
A7: How I already said that it’s very important for the user to feel well when he is working.A good surrounding can support the work and the office very much.And if you have modern propulsive environment ,you can also work in a propulsive way and have good result.
Q8: How do you grasp the concept of beauty.
A8: I think beauty can not only be alone.If something should be beautiful.It also should be the kind of useful and something else. But something not just beauty,this is, it’s art.If you want some more, if you talk about products, beauty mean to be more and only to be nice.
Okay, minimalism is a difficult thing.Minimalism can be very quickly boring.You have to find out a good way to make simple things but not boring.You should add always an interesting points to make or something else a good thing.Only minimalism is not enough. Minimalism is enough if you reduce senseless things and you you have minimalism and you have good solution in the end.
Q9: From your perspective what the office chair future will be?
A9: I think in the future, people will more and more work in home office.I think the current situation requires this ,and we see lots of people work at home and enjoy that very much because they can be more together with the family.I think the future , after pandemic, it complete change .In the future , it will have huge amount of home workers and we can design l lot of chairs for that.
