On April 12, the winners of the German iF Design Award, one of the four major industrial design awards in the world, were officially announced. Goodtone Furniture AMOLA series has won the international design award certification after winning the 2022 German Design Award with its forward-looking design concept and the ultimate comfortable sitting experience.
In this issue, Joel Velasquez is specially invited to share his views on design and office life, so that more people can understand design development and office trends.
Q1: what do you think is the fundamental reason for the numerous international industrial design awards for the team's works?
Joel: We have always focused on developing products that meet the standards of excellence and innovation. Thanks to this mentality, numerous international institutions focused on design have evaluated our work. And as a result many of our products have received national and international awards, as in the case of AMOLA.
Q2: How do you catch the design inspiration and stay creative?
Joel: Even though projects are often developed from something that inspires us, in my opinion most of the time, the design process consists of an iterative period, in which the concepts that are being generated are evaluated in detail to validate the viability of these. It is in this very exiting process where the creativity of the designer is very present, either from the aesthetics or functionality part of the product to be developed.
Q3: Have you encountered design barriers and bottlenecks? How to find the breakthrough point?
Joel: Yes of course! in our profession it is very common to have moments where the solution to a problem requires many trial and error attempts. This process can be somewhat frustrating but once a way is found to break down the barriers that put our knowledge and skills to the maximum, the result is very rewarding. It is definitely very important to be patient and consistent as a designer.
Q4: How to stay productive at work? Would you mind offering some suggestions?
Joel: In my opinion this depends on the type of habits that each person has. Personally, my productivity increases in the afternoon hours, I am a “night owl”, so I carry out organizational tasks such as emails, calls, among others, in the morning hours and then I have greater availability and energy to focus on my creative tasks. It is also important to take active breaks where we move or stretch our bodies, these can be 5 minutes every hour, this helps us concentrate more having a positive impact in our productivity.
Q5: What role does the office chair play in the office space?
Joel: Most people underestimate the importance of office chairs not only in the workplace but also at home. During working hours, we sit for an average of 7 hours a day, which is why we must be very aware of our posture and use a product that adjusts to the ergonomic needs of our bodies. I continually use the mattress we sleep on as an example, we spend a large part of our lives on it and comfort is the priority. Office chairs fulfill the same function, but during working hours.
Q6: What kind of office chair design can empower and create value for the enterprise?
Joel: Fortunately, today's workspaces are very flexible and varied. This allows us as industrial designers to be more creative since there are more categories and types of products in the furniture segment where we can focus our skills. This flexibility allows industries to distinguish themselves from each other by allowing them to develop a story for their brand, in which a large variety of specific seating products is available to provide value and empower their image.
Q7: How do you think of the future of office work?
Joel: I believe that Covid-19 forced us to come up with new ways and strategies to work and interact with people. Even though companies were not necessarily ready for this, most found they were able to shift into a digital mode of work. This period is giving us a quick peek, of where the future of office work is heading to. Home Office has proved that with proper management this new form of work can be effective for both the employer and the employee. Therefore, companies are now willing to maintain the remote work allowance for their employees, either part or full time.
